Color Change Best Practices
Speak to me of best practices for winding warps with frequent color changes.
Over the summer I wove a color gamp, which had changes every couple inches. I made those changes by tying the threads each individually around a peg on the side of the board below the first peg, stopping and starting, so two loose ends every couple inches. That warp was super fussy to tie onto the warp beam, because the first and last threads weren’t loops. And I had tension problems with those edge threads throughout the project.
I just cut a dog of a warp off the loom that was plagued with tension problems. (see picture) I made the color changes in that warp by knotting the colors together at the first peg (before the cross), giving the threads a tug to settle the knot, and continuing to wind. I could only get half the way through that warp. I wound it all forward onto the cloth beam to try and figure out if I could salvage it, and all of the tension problems were coming from the knots loosening.
I see many beautiful projects with lots of color changes and no whining about tension at the changes. Most of them aren’t warped sectionally.
What is this witchery?
