Color Gamp Draft
Since the post on color has gotten a lot of comments and positive feedback, particularly asking for beginners to post, I thought I’d post the draft I developed as a first project to exercise my “new” 12s Bergman loom. I posted a picture of the loom dressing in process yesterday.
This will be the fifth warp for me, and I still have a lot to learn about weaving! I’ve fallen in love with drafting, though, and am coming up with many many more drafts than I can possibly weave myself.
It only uses 8 shafts, but requires 12 treadles for the twill and the remaining 2 for tabby/plainweave. Each combination of colors progresses from a 3×1 twill block, to a 2×2, and then a 1×3, so I can see the colors in different percentages. I don’t show all 27 colors in the draft, just a representative subset.
I expect the loom will need some refurbishment, so part of the motivation for this piece is to learn about the loom before breaking it down and restoring it. Since it’s a studio reference piece I’m (telling myself I will be) less concerned about selvedge and tension issues than if I was making something “real.”
I also started looking for a more-than-four shaft loom after buying the color gamp kit and realizing how limited the color play would be on my 4s Norwood. Never dreamed I’d end up with a 12s countermarche!
Anyway. Draft:
